Erdogan trumps Darwin: Turkey

«Any day now, the education ministry is expected to publish changes to the official curriculum. The latest addition is a class on last summer’s coup attempt against the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Booklets distributed to schoolchildren last year described the coup as an attempt by foreign powers to occupy Turkey. The new course is likely to be just as enlightening. To spare impressionable minds further confusion about the state of the world, officials have also removed the theory of evolution from high-school biology books; such subjects are “beyond [the] comprehension” of the young, reckons the head of the education board. Mr Erdogan is determined, however, to teach children respect for all lifestyles: on Sunday his policemen broke up an LGBT pride rally in Istanbul using tear-gas and rubber bullets. Turkish parents can rest easy. Their children are surely in good hands.»
